How to Use a Glitch Text Generator: A Beginner's Guide
Glitch text looks like a signal that is breaking up: letters crowned with scratches, with marks hanging underneath and lines running through the middle. It is popular for horror captions, gaming names, hacker-style posts and anything that should feel corrupted. The good news is that it is easy to create. The slightly harder part is getting a result that looks the way you imagined and still works where you paste it.
This beginner's guide explains how a glitch text generator works, what each control does, how to choose settings for different uses, and how to troubleshoot the most common problems. You can follow along in the glitch text generator.
What glitch text is made of
Glitch text is normal text with extra characters attached to each letter. Those extra characters are called combining marks. They are part of Unicode, and they are meant to be drawn on or around the character that comes before them. The accent on the letter in the word “café” is one. Unicode has hundreds of these marks, and a glitch generator simply attaches many of them to every letter.
The marks fall into three groups, and the generator controls each group separately:
- Above. Marks that sit on top of the letter, such as tildes, dots, small letters and arrows.
- Through. Marks drawn across the middle of the letter, such as overlays and slashes.
- Below. Marks that sit beneath the letter, such as dots, hooks and lines.
The letters themselves are unchanged. That is why heavily glitched text is still “real” text: if you could strip the marks, the original word would be there. For a deeper explanation of the mechanism, read What Is Zalgo Text?
Step-by-step: make your first glitch text
- Type a short word or phrase. Start with one to three words. Glitch text grows quickly and long sentences become unreadable.
- Leave the settings at their defaults. The default intensity on the glitch page is a light setting, so your word stays readable.
- Look at the quick presets. Under the main result, the Light, Medium, Heavy and Extreme presets show the range at a glance.
- Adjust the intensity. Move the slider up one step at a time. Stop when the text is distorted but still recognizable.
- Press Copy. A message confirms that the text was copied.
- Paste and check. Paste into your app and look at the result before you publish it.
What each control does
Intensity
The intensity slider is a shortcut. Moving it sets the marks above, below and through the letters together, in sensible proportions. Low values (1 to 3) add a few marks per letter. Medium values (4 to 6) give the classic glitch look. High values (7 to 10) make the letters hard to read. After you use the intensity slider, you can still adjust the three mark sliders by hand.
Marks above, through and below
These sliders set the maximum number of marks per letter in each group. A word with many marks above and few below looks like it has flames or antennae. Equal numbers above and below give a symmetrical look. Marks through the middle give the strikethrough and static feel. If you want to keep letters readable, keep the through marks low, because they cross the strokes of the letters.
Randomize the marks
With randomization on, each letter gets a different number of marks, up to your maximum, and the marks are picked at random from the pool. This looks more natural. With randomization off, every letter gets the same count. The pattern stays the same while you edit your text and only changes if you press Randomize again. This matters because it lets you edit a typo without the whole design shifting.
Maximum text length
This slider limits how many characters of your text are processed. It keeps your browser fast and protects you from creating an enormous output by accident. If you paste a long paragraph, the tool processes only the first part and tells you.
Letter style
The letter style menu changes the base letters before the marks are applied. Bold or fraktur letters hold up better under heavy marks than thin letters because the strokes are thicker. Try bold with a medium setting for a strong look.
Reset settings
The reset button returns every slider to the page's defaults. Use it whenever you have wandered into something unreadable.
Recommended settings for common uses
| Use | Intensity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Username or display name | 1 to 3 | Keep it light. Many platforms strip or limit combining marks. |
| Caption heading | 3 to 5 | Short phrase only. Check how it looks in the feed. |
| Horror or hacker title | 5 to 8 | Pair with bold letters. Keep to two or three words. |
| Image text or poster | 8 to 10 | Check that it does not overlap other lines. |
| Chat message | 2 to 4 | Long glitch messages may be cut off by the app. |

How to copy and paste glitch text
On a computer, press the Copy button and then paste with Ctrl+V on Windows or Cmd+V on a Mac. On a phone, tap Copy, then touch and hold in the target field and choose Paste. If the Copy button cannot reach the clipboard because of a browser setting, the tool selects the text so you can copy it by hand.
After pasting, check the result in the place where people will see it. A bio, a feed post, a chat window and a username field can all draw the same characters differently. For device-specific steps and fixes, see our copy-and-paste guide.
Why glitch text sometimes looks wrong
Marks overflow the line
Tall stacks of marks can spill over the lines above and below, overlapping other text. This is normal for heavy settings, and some apps clip the marks at the line boundary. Reduce the marks above and below, or leave extra line spacing around the text.
Some marks do not show
Fonts differ in how many marks they can stack. Your device may show fewer marks than another. If a design is critical, check it on the devices your audience uses.
The app removes marks
Some apps normalize text and remove excess combining marks, often to prevent layout problems. When that happens, lower the intensity. If it still fails, that app probably does not allow glitch text.
The text is cut off
Combining marks count as characters. A short word with heavy settings can contain hundreds of them, and the app's character limit may cut the end off. Check the length with the letter counter.
Boxes or question marks
A few marks may not exist in the font of the device. Rerandomize, or reduce intensity, so fewer rare marks are used.
Safe limits and good manners
The generator caps the number of marks per letter, the amount of text processed and the total output length. These limits exist because huge outputs can freeze browsers and apps. It is also considerate to others. A message made of thousands of stacked marks can overlap other people's content in a chat or comment thread and may be treated as spam by moderators. Use glitch text in moderation and follow the rules of the place you post.
Readability and accessibility
Glitch text deliberately damages readability, so use it for style rather than meaning. People with low vision, dyslexia or cognitive disabilities can find heavy glitch text very hard to read. Screen readers may read the extra marks aloud or ignore them, depending on the software. Keep essential information, such as event dates, instructions and contact details, in plain text next to any glitch title.
Using glitch text in images and videos
If you plan to use glitch text in a graphic, a thumbnail or a video title, the safest approach is to type it into a design tool, take a screenshot or export an image, and use that. Live text can render differently from device to device, but an image looks the same everywhere. When you do this, keep the plain words in the caption or description so people who cannot see the image, or who rely on search, can still get the message. For a screenshot, a medium setting usually looks best because the marks are visible without swallowing the letters.
Glitch, Zalgo and cursed text: what is the difference?
All three use the same technique. The difference is mostly the default intensity. The glitch generator starts light, the Zalgo generator starts heavier, and the cursed text generator starts at the heavy end with many marks through the middle. You can reach any of the three looks on any page by moving the sliders.
Frequently asked questions
Does glitch text work on Instagram, Discord or X?
Often, yes, in short amounts. Each app handles combining marks in its own way, so test a short sample. Light settings work in more places than heavy ones.
Can I turn glitch text back into normal text?
Yes. The original letters are still there, and tools that remove combining marks can recover them. Keep your plain original so you do not need to rely on that.
Is glitch text a virus or harmful?
No. It is plain text made of normal Unicode characters. Very heavy output can slow down some apps because they must draw so many marks, which is why this tool limits the amount.
Why does it look different on my friend's phone?
Different devices use different fonts, and each font positions marks differently. The characters are the same, but the drawing is not.
Conclusion
A glitch text generator is easy to use: type a short phrase, set the intensity, copy and paste. The skill is in restraint. A light setting on two or three words looks deliberate and works almost everywhere, while a heavy setting on a long line often becomes unreadable, gets cut off or is rejected by the app. Start light, try bold letters for strength, test where you plan to post, and keep a plain version of anything that matters. When you are ready, open the glitch text generator and experiment.
