About this tool

A strikethrough is drawn by Unicode combining characters placed after each letter. The long stroke overlay (U+0336) crosses the full letter, the short stroke overlay (U+0335) draws a smaller line, and the long solidus overlay (U+0338) draws a diagonal slash. Your original letters stay as they are, with marks attached.

The two combined results first convert the letters to bold or monospace, then add the strike marks. These look stronger on shorter words. Because the marks attach to each character, spaces get lines too, so a crossed-out sentence appears as one continuous line.

How to use the strikethrough text generator

  1. Type the text you want to cross out.
  2. Choose long, short, slash or a combined style.
  3. Press Copy.
  4. Paste it and check that the line appears at the right height in your app.

Good uses

  • Showing an old price next to a new one.
  • Humorous corrections, as in a crossed-out first guess.
  • Marking completed items in plain-text lists.
  • Edited text in comments and posts.

Compatibility and limits

Combining marks are drawn by the font, so line height and thickness can vary, and in some fonts the line sits too high or too low. A few apps drop the marks and show plain text. If an app has its own strikethrough, such as markdown ~~text~~ on Discord, that is more reliable.

Text made with Unicode characters can be hard for screen readers to read and may not match searches for the original words. Keep names, links and important details in plain text.

Frequently asked questions

Is it real strikethrough formatting?

No. It is combining characters that look like a line through the text. Real formatting is stored separately from the characters.

Why is the line uneven?

Each letter has its own mark, and fonts position them slightly differently for different shapes.

Does it work in screen readers?

Many do not announce the marks, so a reader may speak the text as if nothing were crossed out. Add words like “was” when the meaning matters.
